Odaxosaurus was named by Gilmore (1928). Its type is Odaxosaurus obliquus.
It was assigned to Sauria by Gilmore (1928), Hay (1930); to Melanosaurini by Estes (1983); to Odaxosaurinae by Sullivan (1986); and to Anguidae by Carroll (1988), Bryant (1989), Gao and Fox (1996), Sullivan and Lucas (1996), Peng et al. (2001), Longrich et al. (2012).
