Provaranosaurus was named by Gilmore (1942). Its type is Provaranosaurus acutus.

It was assigned to Varanidae by Gilmore (1942); to Parasaniwidae by Estes (1976); and to Necrosauridae by Estes (1983), Carroll (1988).
