Taxonomy
Pteria hertleini was named by Wiedey (1928). Its type specimen is Leland Stanford Junior University 434, a valve, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LSJU loc. 200, Los Vaqueros Valley, which is in a Miocene coastal horizon in the Vaqueros Formation of California.
