Aigialosauridae was named by Kramberger (1892). It is not extant. Its type is Aigialosaurus. It was considered monophyletic by Lee and Caldwell (2000).
It was reranked as the unranked clade Aigialosauridae by Lee and Caldwell (2000).
It was assigned to Lacertilia by Huene (1954); to Platynota by Kuhn (1946), McDowell and Bogert (1954); to Varanoidea by Kuhn (1966), Seiffert (1975), Carroll (1988), Carroll and DeBraga (1992); to Mosasauridae by Lee and Caldwell (2000); and to Mosasauroidea by Caldwell et al. (1995), Bell and Polcyn (2005).
