Barypodus gravis was named by Schmidt (1959). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Rotenburg RoC 1+2, a footprint, and it is a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Laoporus gravis by Haubold (1971), Courel and Demathieu (1976).
