Cymatosauridae was named by von Huene. It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Nothosauridae by Kuhn (1971).

It was assigned to Nothosauroidea by Young (1965); to Nothosauria by Kuhn (1966); to Nothosauria by Carroll (1988); to Eosauropterygia by Rieppel (1997); and to Cymatosauria by Rieppel (2000).
