Prolacerta was named by Parrington (1935). Its type is Prolacerta broomi. It was considered monophyletic by Modesto and Sues (2004).
It was assigned to Protorosauridae by Chatterjee (1986); to Prolacertiformes by Senter (2004); to Archosauromorpha by Modesto and Sues (2004), Nesbitt (2011); and to Prolacertidae by Chatterjee (1980), Benton (1985), Carroll (1988), Ezcurra (2016).
