Taxonomy
Xilousuchus was named by Wu (1981). Its type is Xilousuchus sapingensis. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt et al. (2011), Nesbitt (2011).
It was assigned to Proterosuchidae by Wu (1981), Carroll (1988); to Ctenosauriscidae by Butler et al. (2011); to Ctenosauriscidae by Nesbitt et al. (2011); and to Poposauroidea by Nesbitt (2011).
