Procerosuchus was named by Huene (1942). Its type is Procerosuchus celer.
It was assigned to Stagonolepidae by Huene (1942) and Kuhn (1946); to Rauisuchidae by Kuhn (1966) and Carroll (1988); and to Pseudosuchia by Nesbitt et al. (2013).
