Taxonomy
Poposaurus was named by Mehl (1915). It is not extant. Its type is Poposaurus gracilis. It is the type genus of Poposauridae, Poposauroidea. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt (2011).
It was assigned to Anchisauridae by Hay (1930); to Theropoda by Tatarinov (1964); to Poposauridae by Nopcsa (1928), Colbert (1961), Kuhn (1966), Romer (1966), Steel (1970), Anderson and Cruickshank (1978), Parrish and Carpenter (1986), Carroll (1988), Parrish (1993), Long and Murry (1995), Irmis (2005), Weinbaum and Hungerbühler (2007); and to Poposauroidea by Nesbitt (2011), Gauthier et al. (2011).
