Taxonomy
Aetosauroides was named by Casamiquela (1960). It was considered monophyletic by Desojo and Ezcurra (2011).
It was synonymized subjectively with Stagonolepis by Heckert and Lucas (1999), Lucas and Heckert (2001) and Heckert and Lucas (2002).
It was assigned to Aetosauridae by Casamiquela (1960) and Charig (1967); to Stagnolepididae by Carroll (1988); to Aetosaurinae by Parker (2007) and Desojo and Ezcurra (2011); and to Aetosauria by Parker (2016).

Ezcurra 2011 | As for type species: Aetosaur distinguished from other known pseudosuchian archosaurs, including Stagonolepis, by the following unique combination of apomorphies (autapomorphy with asterisk): maxilla excluded from the margin of the external naris; ventral margin of dentary convex and without sharp inflexion; tooth crowns with straight distal margin and without constriction between root and crown, denticles, and wear facets; cervical and dorsal centra with oval fossae ventral to the neurocentral suture on the lateral sides of the centra; mid- and posterior dorsals with well-developed posterior infradiapophyseal lamina directly below the diapophyses, and postzygapophyses posterolaterally divergent, ratio between the entire length of the postzygapophyses and the width between the distal-most tips of the postzygapophyses equal or lower than 0.75* |
