Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
J. B. Desojo and M. D. Ezcurra 2011As for type species: Aetosaur distinguished from other known pseudosuchian archosaurs, including Stagonolepis, by the following unique combination of apomorphies (autapomorphy with asterisk): maxilla excluded from the margin of the external naris; ventral margin of dentary convex and without sharp inflexion; tooth crowns with straight distal margin and without constriction between root and crown, denticles, and wear facets; cervical and dorsal centra with oval fossae ventral to the neurocentral suture on the lateral sides of the centra; mid- and posterior dorsals with well-developed posterior infradiapophyseal lamina directly below the diapophyses, and postzygapophyses posterolaterally divergent, ratio between the entire length of the postzygapophyses and the width between the distal-most tips of the postzygapophyses equal or lower than 0.75*
