Taxonomy
Erpetosuchus was named by Newton (1894). It is the type genus of Erpetosuchidae. It was considered monophyletic by Nesbitt and Butler (2012).
It was assigned to Parasuchia by Newton (1894); to Proterosuchidae by Huene (1922); to Pseudosuchia by Broom (1913) and Huene (1942); to Ornithosuchidae by Romer (1956); to Suchia by Benton and Walker (2002); to Crocodylomorpha by Fiorelli and Calvo (2008); and to Erpetosuchidae by Watson (1917), Nopcsa (1928), Kuhn (1966), Carroll (1988) and Nesbitt and Butler (2012).
