Oxybeloceras petrolense was named by Anderson (1958). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is CAS loc. 31364, Petroleum Creek, Rumsey Hills, which is in a Campanian marine conglomerate in California.
It was recombined as Pseudoxybeloceras petrolense by Matsumoto (1959).
