Taxonomy
Aphanoptyxis californica was named by Saul and Squires (1998). Its type specimen is LACMIP 7912 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LACMIP loc. 10761, Little Cow Creek valley, which is in a Turonian shoreface sandstone in the Redding Formation of California.
