Taxonomy
Volutoderma perissa was named by Saul and Squires (2008). Its type specimen is SDNHM 33994 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is SDNHM Loc. 3405 - Carlsbad area, off College Boulevard and Palomar Airport Road, which is in a Campanian/Maastrichtian marginal marine /sandstone in the Point Loma Formation of California.
