Hesperosuchus was named by Colbert (1952). Its type is Hesperosuchus agilis.
It was assigned to Ornithosuchidae by Colbert (1952) and Romer (1956); to Pedeticosauridae by Charig (1967) and Walker (1970); to Sphenosuchia by Long and Murry (1995); to Sphenosuchidae by Carroll (1988) and Clark et al. (2000); to Crocodilomorphi by Irmis (2005) and Nesbitt (2011); and to Crocodylomorpha by Irmis et al. (2013).
