Notochampsa was named by Broom (1904).

It was considered a nomen dubium by Whetstone and Whybrow (1983).

It was assigned to Aetosauridae by Watson (1917); to Erpetosuchidae by Nopcsa (1928); to Protosuchia by Charig (1967); to Stegomosuchidae by Walker (1970); to Protosuchidae by Carroll (1988); and to Notochampsidae by Haughton (1924), Ellenberger (1970) and Dollman and Clark (2021).
