Polysiphon was named by Girty (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-u]. Its type is Polysiphon mirabilis.

It was assigned to Calcarea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Polysiphonidae by Girty (1909), Senowbari-Daryan and Rigby (2011).
