Pliogonodon was named by Leidy (1856) [also but incorrectly said to be 1857]. Its type is Pliogonodon priscus.
It was synonymized subjectively with Mosasaurus by Zittel (1890).
It was assigned to Goniopholidae by Hay (1902); to Crocodylidae by Hay (1930); and to Goniophididae by Carroll (1988).
