Taxonomy

Sebecus was named by Stirton (1953) [part of mandible and isolated teeth]. Its type is Sebecus icaeorhinus. It is the type genus of Sebecosuchia.

It was assigned to Sebecosuchia by Charig (1967); to Sebecosuchia by Turner (2006); to Neosuchia by Andrade and Bertini (2008); to Notosuchia by Sereno et al. (2003), Bronzati et al. (2012); and to Sebecidae by Colbert (1946), Stirton (1953), Langston (1965), Busbey (1986), Carroll (1988), Gasparini et al. (1991), Gasparini et al. (1993), Ortega et al. (2000), Carvalho et al.
