Sebecus was named by Stirton (1953) [part of mandible and isolated teeth]. Its type is Sebecus icaeorhinus. It is the type genus of Sebecosuchia.
It was assigned to Sebecosuchia by Charig (1967); to Sebecosuchia by Turner (2006); to Neosuchia by Andrade and Bertini (2008); to Notosuchia by Sereno et al. (2003), Bronzati et al.
