Gryposuchus was named by Gürich (1912). Its type is Gryposuchus jessei.
It was assigned to Crocodylidae by Patterson (1936); to Gavialidae by Carroll (1988), Langston and Gasparini (1997), Kraus (1998) and Riff et al. (2010); to Gavialoidea by Brochu and Rincón (2004), Delfino et al. (2005), Jouve et al. (2006), Martin and Buffetaut (2008), Jouve et al. (2008) and Puértolas et al. (2011); and to Gryposuchinae by Vélez-Juarbe et al. (2007), Salas-Gismondi et al. (2016) and Rio and Mannion (2021).
