Deinosuchus was named by Holland (1909).

It was assigned to Crocodylidae by Baird and Horner (1979) and Carroll (1988); to Globidonta by Massonne et al. (2019); and to Alligatoroidea by Brochu (1999), Erickson and Brochu (1999), Rivera-Sylva et al. (2011), Puértolas et al. (2011), Farke et al. (2014) and Cossette and Brochu (2020).

Synonyms

Phobosuchus was named by Nopcsa (1924).

It was synonymized subjectively with Deinosuchus by Lucas et al. (2006).

It was assigned to Crocodylidae by Hay (1930).
Polydectes was named by Cope (1869).

It was synonymized subjectively with Crocodylus by Miller (1967); it was synonymized subjectively with Deinosuchus by Baird and Horner (1979).

It was assigned to Crocodylidae by Hay (1902) and Hay (1930); and to Goniophididae by Carroll (1988).
Pliogonodon priscus was named by Leidy (1856). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Pliogonodon.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Miller (1967) and Baird and Horner (1979).
