Quinkana was named by Molnar (1982). Its type is Quinkana fortirostrum.
It was assigned to Crocodylinae by Willis (1993); to Crocodylidae by Molnar (1982), Carroll (1988) and Megirian (1994); to Mekosuchinae by Willis et al. (1993) and Willis and Mackness (1996); to Crocodylinae by Rio and Mannion (2021); and to Mekosuchini by Molnar et al. (2002) and Ristevski et al. (2022).
