Conus oweniana was named by Anderson (1905).

It was corrected as Conus owenianus by Hoots (1931); it was recombined as Conus (Chelyconus) owenianus by Addicott (1970); it was recombined as Pyruconus owenianus by Stadum and Finger (2016).
