Ammonites atherstoni was named by Sharpe (1856). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Holcostephanus atherstoni by Neumayr (1882); it was recombined as Astieria atherstoni by Böse (1923); it was recombined as Olcostephanus (Olcostephanus) atherstoni by Mourgues et al. (2015); it was recombined as Olcostephanus atherstoni by Haas (1960), Imlay and Jones (1970), Ovando-Figueroa et al. (2024), Ovando-Figueroa et al. (2024).
