Panzhousaurus rotundirostris was named by Jiang et al. (2018) [A small-sized pachypleurosaur-like eosauropterygian with 24 cervical, 20 dorsal, and three sacral vertebrae (autapomorphy among Eosauropterygia); cervical region shorter than the trunk region; rostrum short, broad, and rounded; postorbital region of skull distinctly longer than preorbital region; upper temporal fenestra elongated but only about half the longitudinal diameter of the orbit; prefrontal small; paired frontals with no anterior or posterior process, meeting nasals anteriorly at level of anterior margin of orbit (autapomorphy among Eosauropterygia); frontoparietal suture anteriorly deeply embayed (concave); fused parietals, forming broad and flat parietal skull table; pineal foramen located in anterior part of parietal skull table; radius as long as ulna, but thinner; ulna straight, with concave anterior and posterior margins; at least six carpal ossifications (intermedium, ulnare, and distal carpals 4, 3, 2, and 1); and at least four tarsal ossifications (astragalus, calcaneum, and distal tarsals 4 and 3).]. Its type specimen is GMPKU-P-1059, a skeleton (Complete, nearly articulated skeleton exposed in dorsal view), and it is a 3D body fossil.
