Taxonomy
Hexactinella was named by Carter (1885) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno R Sepkoski's reference number: 622]. It is extant. Its type is Hexactinella ventilabrum.

It was assigned to Hexactinosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tretodictyinae by Finks et al. (2004).
