Baptanodon was named by Seeley (1874).
It was synonymized subjectively with Ophthalmosaurus by Andrews (1910), Hay (1930) and von Huene (1951).
It was assigned to Baptanodontidae by Hay (1902), Gilmore (1905) and Gilmore (1905); to Baptanodontinae by Merriam (1908); and to Ophthalmosauridae by Appleby (1967).
