Taxonomy
Baptanodon was named by Seeley (1874).

It was synonymized subjectively with Ophthalmosaurus by Andrews (1910), Hay (1930), von Huene (1951).

It was assigned to Baptanodontidae by Hay (1902), Gilmore (1905), Gilmore (1905); to Baptanodontinae by Merriam (1908); and to Ophthalmosauridae by Appleby (1967).
