Colobomycter was named by Vaughn (1958). It is not extant. Its type is Colobomycter pholeter.
It was assigned to Eothyrididae by Vaughn (1958), Langston (1965); to Pelycosauria by Reisz (1986); to Pelycosauria by Carroll (1988); to Protorothyrididae by Laurin and Reisz (1989); and to Acleistorhinidae by Modesto (1999), Modesto and Reisz (2008), Cisneros et al. (2020).
