Taxonomy
Pileolites was named by Finks (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-l Sepkoski's reference number: 203]. Its type is Pileolites baccatus. It is the type genus of Pileolitidae.

It was assigned to Hexactinosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pileolitidae by Finks et al. (2004).
