Acanthoessus bronni was named by Agassiz (1833). Its type specimen is H.G. Bronn Collection (according to A.S. Woodward), a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Acanthodes bronnii by Agassiz (1835); it was considered a nomen nudum by Agassiz (1832); it was recombined as Acanthodes bronni by Agassiz (1833), Woodward (1891), Hay (1902), Denison (1979).
