Purisiphonia was named by Bowerbank (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: K l]. It is not extant. Its type is Purisiphonia clarkei.

It was assigned to Hexactinosa by Sepkoski (2002); to Taegerinae by Reid (2004); and to Euplectellidae by Jell et al. (2011).
