Thrinaxodon was named by Seeley (1894). It is not extant. Its type is Thrinaxodon liorhinus.
It was assigned to Thecodontia by Gardiner (1982); to Galesauridae by Hopson and Kitching (1972), Colbert and Kitching (1977) and Carroll (1988); to Cynodontia by Gauthier et al. (1989); and to Galesauria by Bonaparte (2012).
