Nanocynodon was named by Tatarinov (1968). It is not extant. Its type is Nanocynodon seductus.
It was assigned to Galesauridae by Carroll (1988); to Thrinaxodontidae by Battail and Surkov (2000); and to Procynosuchidae by Hopson and Kitching (1972), Tatarinov (2008).
