Schizaster americana was named by Clark and Twitchell (1915) [attributed to Clark only]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Within town limits of Brandon, on State Highway 18, which is in an Oligocene marine limestone in the Glendon Formation of Mississippi.
It was corrected as Schizaster americanus by Cooke (1942).
