Taxonomy
Scutella excentrica was named by Eschscholz (1826).

It was recombined as Echinarachnius excentricus by Merriam (1899); it was recombined as Echinarachinus excentricus by Pack (1909); it was recombined as Dendraster excentricus by Clark and Twitchell (1915), Kew (1920), Durham (1955); it was recombined as Dendraster excentrius by Grant and Hertlein (1938); it was recombined as Dendraster excentrica by Wagner (1974).
