Stromatidium was named by Girty (1909) [Sepkoski's age data: P Guad-l P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 203]. Its type is Stromatidium typicale.

It was assigned to Hexactinosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Stromatidiidae by Finks et al. (2004).
