Coelopleurus sloani was named by Clark and Twitchell (1915). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bostick Landing, which is in a Miocene marine marl in the Duplin Formation of South Carolina.
It was recombined as Arbacia sloani by Cooke (1941), Kier (1972).
