Tinosaurus was named by Marsh (1872). Its type is Tinosaurus stenodon.
It was assigned to Varanidae by Hay (1902); to Chamaeleonidae by Gilmore (1928); to Chamaelonidae by Hay (1930); to Agamidae by Hecht (1959), Hou (1974), Hou (1976), Estes (1983), Carroll (1988), Augé (2003), Prasad and Bajpai (2008); and to Acrodonta by Smith (2006), Dong et al. (2016).
