Paraclupea was named by Sun (1956). It is the type genus of Paraclupeinae.
It was assigned to Paraclupeidae by Alvarado-Ortega and Melgarejo-Damián (2017), Cantalice et al. (2019); and to Paraclupeinae by Marramà and Carnevale (2023).
