Myctophum regale was named by Gilbert (1892). It is extant.

It was recombined as Lampanyctus (Lampanyctus) regalis by Fraser-Brunner (1949); it was recombined as Lampanyctus regalis by Fitch (1969) and Fierstine et al. (2012).
