Taxonomy
Acutostrea gaviota was named by Squires (2018). Its type specimen is LACMIP 14681, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LACMIP loc. 7289, Cuarta Canyon, Santa Ynez Mountains, which is in a Priabonian marine horizon in the Gaviota Formation of California.

R. L. Squires 2018Shell size medium to large. Strongly inequivalved. Prominent flexure (sulcus) can be present on medial posterior shell margin of trigonal valves. Left valve moderately thick to thick, lightweight or heavy. Right valve thinner and moderately convex to flat. Radial ribs moderately abundant and can be broad and strong. Resilifer groove short, with small bourrelets; base of hinge straight to slightly sinuous. Chomata moderately common and mainly indistinct. Adductor muscle scar reniform, somewhat postero-ventrally located.
