Peraiocynodon was named by Simpson (1928).

It was synonymized subjectively with Docodon by Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004).

It was assigned to Dicrocynodontidae by Simpson (1928); and to Docodontidae by Kron (1979), Carroll (1988), Sigogneau-Russell (2003).
