Lychniscaulus was named by Schrammen (1937) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call-u Sepkoski's reference number: 868]. It is not extant. Its type is Lychniscaulus vannus. It is the type genus of Lychniscaulinae.
It was assigned to Lychniscosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lychniscaulinae by Finks et al. (2004).
