Gymnites ugra was named by Diener (1895). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Chitichun No. 1 Block, which is in an Anisian carbonate limestone in China.
It was recombined as Japonites ugra by Diener (1907); it was recombined as Aegeiceras ugra by Fantini Sestini (1981).
