Etymology. From the Greek words (periergos), meaning strange, bizarre, curious, in reference to the strange features observed in the vertebrae of this genus, and in particular the anteroventrally directed haemal keel tubercles on the posterior trunk vertebrae, and (ophis), meaning snake.
