Phlyctaenium was named by Zittel (1878) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo J Kimm-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066].

It was assigned to Dinichthyidae by Jordan (1963); to Lychniscosa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Polyblastidiidae by Finks et al. (2004).
