Xenopodinae was named by Fitzinger (1843). It is extant.

It was reranked as the family Xenopidae by Gadow (1898); it was corrected as Xenopinae by Sanchiz (1998).

It was assigned to Aglossa by Gadow (1898); and to Pipidae by Sanchiz (1998), Henrici and Báez (2001), Báez and Harrison (2005).
