Neithea grandicosta was named by Gabb (1869).

It was recombined as Neithea (Neitheops) grandicosta by Stewart (1930); it was recombined as Neithea (Neithea) grandicosta by Iba et al. (2011).

Y. Iba et al. 2011Small-sized Neithea species, with convex right valves and flattened left valves. Six primary ribs between each three weak ribs. Secondary ribs very weak, not high, flat-topped, comparatively narrow, nearly equal devel- opment. Left valve nearly flat, provided with six elevated and angular primary radials ribs.
