Wongaspongia was named by Rigby and Webby (1988) [Sepkoski's age data: O u]. It is not extant. Its type is Wongaspongia minor.

It was assigned to Pyruspongiidae by Rigby and Webby (1988); and to Lyssacinosida by Sepkoski (2002).
